REPAIR CASE STUDY SR-1253

Yaskawa GA Series Repair

The Yaskawa GA Series is a variable frequency drive used to control AC motor speed and torque in pumps, fans, conveyors, process equipment, and production machinery.

Brand Yaskawa
Equipment GA50B4005ABBA
Equipment Category GA Series
Industry Plastics
Fault Reported
  • Drive trips, fails to start, or shows overcurrent / DC-bus / power-stage related faults.
Repair Turnaround Time Typical reference: 3–6 working days

The Challenge

The driven motor could not run reliably, stopping a critical machine function and increasing production downtime.

Diagnosis

  • The input stage, DC bus, pre-charge circuit, IGBT power section, gate drivers, current sensing, cooling system, and control board were inspected.

Our Solution

  • Defective power or control components were replaced as required, cooling and connection issues were corrected, boards were cleaned, and the drive was functionally tested with a motor.

Testing Performed

  • Input inspection; DC-bus test; power-stage test; motor rotation test; current monitoring; fault-reset test; thermal and burn-in test.

Final Result

The reference repair process restores normal functional operation after the unit passes the defined electrical, communication, motion, or load checks applicable to the equipment.

Common Fault Codes & Causes

  • oC – Overcurrent: Motor/cable short, overload, rapid acceleration or power-stage fault.
  • ov – DC bus overvoltage: High line voltage, regenerative energy or short deceleration time.
  • Uv1 – DC bus undervoltage: Low input voltage, phase loss, fuse or supply interruption.
  • oH1 – Heatsink overheat: Cooling fan/airflow issue, high ambient temperature or overload.
  • oL1 – Motor overload: Mechanical overload, low-speed high torque or incorrect motor data.
  • oL2 – Drive overload: Excessive drive current/duty cycle or undersized drive.
  • GF – Ground fault: Motor/cable insulation failure or output leakage to ground.
  • SC – Short circuit: Output short circuit, damaged cable/motor or power stage.
  • PF – Input phase loss: Mains phase loss or input supply imbalance.
  • LF – Output phase loss: Open motor phase, loose terminal or damaged motor cable.

Preventive Maintenance

  • Maintain clean cooling paths, verify motor load and cabling, inspect fans, protect against voltage disturbances, and keep the cabinet temperature within limits.
